Cohen 1939 demo and playtest
The Cohen 1939 demo is no longer downloadable. It was removed on September 22, 2026 — Cube of Cube said its content and gameplay differ significantly from the full game. The earlier playtest build was already offline.
If you were waiting to try Cohen 1939 before launch, the window has closed: the demo is gone from Steam. This page explains what happened, what the demo contained, and how to read the reviews it left behind before you buy.

The demo is gone — here is what happened
Cube of Cube removed the demo on September 22, 2026, one week before launch. The studio's own announcement gives the reasons in plain words: "Various issues remain with the current demo; its content and overall gameplay differ significantly from the full version (which is launching very soon). We're proud of what we've created here, and don't want new players to think the demo represents our finished product."
The same post confirmed the launch: "We plan to release in Sep 29, 2026 (PDT)." It also said the team was "carrying out some final tweaks and tests as part of our pre-launch preparations."
The demo's life, in dates
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| May 22, 2026 | Demo launches; the older playtest build is taken offline |
| June 15, 2026 | Demo joins Steam Next Fest |
| June 17, 2026 | Patch: save wipe (old cloud saves broke the build), Sevinda skill fix, leaderboard fixes |
| September 22, 2026 | Demo removed ahead of launch |
| September 29, 2026 | Full game releases (PT) |
What the demo contained
- Chapters 1 and 2, complete — six levels and one boss battle (the Butcher).
- Three playable characters of the four killers in the full game.
- An estimated 1-2 hours of combat per the Next Fest announcement.
- A safehouse-style screen between missions with loadouts and unlocks.
How the demo was received
The demo ended its life with around 70 reviews on Steam, split almost exactly evenly (35 positive, 35 negative). What the two camps agree and disagree on is useful context for the launch build:
| Praised | Criticised |
|---|---|
| Fast, stylish one-hit-kill action with a strong Hotline Miami pull | Stutter and optimisation issues, especially in the gang's house area |
| Weapon throwing and snatch-and-kill loop | Thin options: players asked for zoom, more settings and controller support |
| Art direction, weapons and music | A tutorial bug where the starting umbrella could break early |
| Tense stealth-or-loud level design | The Butcher boss: difficulty spikes, hitbox and barrier complaints |
Can I still play the demo?
Only if you already had it: Steam removes demo downloads from accounts when a demo is retired, and the demo page itself has been taken down. There is no official re-release as of September 28, 2026. Any "Cohen 1939 demo download" offered outside Steam is not official and should be treated as unsafe.
What carries over to the full game
The studio says the full version differs significantly from the demo, so the safe reading is: the demo showed the concept, not the finish. The known differences in the studio's favour — four killers instead of three, a longer campaign, and months of extra work since the last demo patch — are exactly the areas the demo reviews complained about most.
FAQ
Why was the Cohen 1939 demo removed?
The studio said the demo had various remaining issues and differed significantly from the full version, and it did not want new players to mistake it for the finished product.
Will the demo come back after launch?
No announcement. Studios sometimes re-release demos as "prologues", but nothing has been said about Cohen 1939 doing so.
What is the difference between the playtest and the demo?
The playtest was the earlier, rougher build taken offline on May 22, 2026 when the demo replaced it; its cloud saves later had to be wiped in the June 17 patch. The demo was the public Next Fest build covered above.
